Buying an old muscle car when I graduate from school sounds like a wonderfully bad idea to me. I love my car but I want something older, less common, and something with more attitude. A big, V8, poorly handling car would complement my small, I4, well handling Miata perfectly. Graduation is 2 years down the road but still...

I see no problem with that. Owning a classic has it's benfits. They don't depreciate like a new car would. They are alao easy to work on yourself, and parts are cheap. For example I just bought an oil pan ggasket for $13 minutes ago for my truck. If I bought one for the M3 it would be 10 times that at least.

That's a hell of a way to jump in.
That's a Fast back, 4 speed, Ford version of my Montego. Great cars, it'll haul ass in that setup don't let the 302 make you think it's slow. Has a factory 4Barrel Carb and everything (this includes an adjustment to the heads).
I personally recommend Mercury, but damn you found a nice car there. I'm sure he wants big bucks for it though.

My advice.
Find a cheap old muscle car FROM THE SOUTH.
Find a 6 cylinder model. Replace with LSX or Coyote. and a 6 speed.
Install a complete suspension kit.
Enjoy.
Could be done for under 30k

That was the first car I found that I liked just doing a quick search. Fords or a GTO would be what I'm most interested in. I'd like to find a car that just has some small things that need to be sorted out, just to keep the price down slightly. Plus that woud give me more of an excuse to work on it.

Indeed. I'm telling you, you gotta check out some Merc's. Think Ford with a touch of different. Kind of like how you like a GTO instead of a Chevelle.
What's your budget roughly, I'll search them up for you (I love finding me some Muscle Mercury)

On a classic I would look into aftermarket parts availability. Some classics have really zero parts out there and they become money pits.

I like this idea. I assume you mention buying one from the south to avoid rust? This might path might actually be more conducive to whatever budget I'll have since I can make it exactly as I want it.

Always been a GTO fan and not a Chevy guy. As I said this would be like 2 years from now, but as a rough guess I'd say $20k or so. But thats a rough estimate, who knows what kind of job I'll have but I won't have any college bills to pay.

Yep, find a 6 cylinder Camaro and swap in an LS3 and a T-56, or a Mustang and a Coyote and a T-56. Hell, even a Challenger and a new Hemi.
Old muscle cars, with old muscle car handling and drivetrain, absolutely suck to DD, if you've ever had a modern car.

Main interest is Fords or a GTO. Maybe a problem for GTOs but Mustang stuff has got to be endless.

depends on the year mustang pretty much everything is there for a 65-70 stang. GTO is also good to go on parts. If it was w tempest or Lemans (lower trim level same body) then it's an issue

Didn't realize you paid that little for your car. The $20k figure isn't so much what I'd like to spend but what I could potentially spend.

If it was fully restored it would probably mid teens, maybe 20 at the right buyer. Another one of the reasons I snagged it haha. 60k original miles, original window sticker, old lady to the store and church kind of car.
They also didn't know it was a Cyclone Package. That was a big win for me.
Just quick searched your area and you can get some bad ass Mercury Cougars around 10k. In 2 years I don't predict that changing much. If you can find a Cyclone or a Montego I recommend you jump on it for rarity factor. Torino's and Fairlanes are basically the same car so expand at least that far on your search. In 68 the Mercury Comet was basically an oddly badged Montego also.
You have lots of FoMoCo options in 68/69. Cyclone's are available back in the mid/early 60s as well for performance Mercury's (damn cool front ends in the mid 60s, seriously).

Owning another OLD car is really my biggest reason for wanting to get one. I miss my 83' 300TD but its not fast by any stretch of the imagination and I'd like something American haha.
